RAAF Air Board Order A.64 dated 9 March 1943 – “Operational Service Chevrons – Introduction and Issue”, detailed the following:
1. It has been decided to introduce operational service chevrons for issue to and wearing by RAAF and RAAFNS personnel to denote operational service rendered with the Royal Australian Air Force.
2. The term “operational service” means service overseas in any theatre of operations not being a part of the Commonwealth of Australia, or service in any other place declared, for the purposes of this order, to be a theatre of operations. The Mandated Territory of New Guinea and the Territory of Papua have each, with effect from 1st January 1942, been so declared.
Chevrons will be of blue worsted embroidery, ¼ inch in width, the arms 1-1/4 inches long. They will be worn on the right sleeve of the tunic only, and placed centrally on the outer side of the sleeve with the centre point upwards.
